These two terms describe phenomena that have gained increasing significance in recent years. Particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic, their attention and relevance in companies have grown. But what exactly lies behind them?

Workation refers to the combination of work and vacation at a location far from the usual work environment. Imagine pictures posted on LinkedIn of people sitting under palm trees using their laptops to work. Workation allows employees to work flexibly while enjoying the benefits of a travel destination.

On the other hand, there is Bleisure Travel, which involves the private extension of a business trip. Once the business obligations are fulfilled, travelers take the opportunity to enjoy a few extra days of leisure and relaxation.

Both concepts have one thing in common: They break traditional perceptions of work and enable temporal and spatial flexibility. What was previously met with resistance or misunderstanding from employers is gradually being accepted as a positive work form in line with New Work.

In a dissertation supervised by Corinna Döpkens as part of the Heisenberg Professorship for Work and Organizational Sociology, she systematically examines the opportunities and challenges of Workation and Bleisure Travel. To enable a scientifically sound engagement with these topics, she will be conducting expert interviews in the coming weeks. The goal of the expert survey is to clearly delineate the areas of Workation and Bleisure Travel. So far, a differentiated examination and scientific basis for these new working models has been lacking. Therefore, she is looking for experts like you to fill this research gap.

The interviews will last about 30 to 45 minutes and can take place either virtually or in person. All rules of good scientific practice will be followed, and your responses will be treated anonymously and confidentially. Of course, we can also sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) in advance to protect your data.

Your participation in the expert survey offers you numerous advantages. You will gain access to the study’s results, which can help you strengthen your employer brand. We are happy to present the insights either digitally or in a personal meeting. Additionally, we aim to promote exchange among all interested parties and create a platform for dialogue.

I would be delighted if you could participate in the expert survey. Your experience and expertise are invaluable for the dissertation of my colleague, Corinna Döpkens. Please let me or Corinna Döpkens know if you are interested and available for an interview with her.

Simply contact us via email or phone to arrange a suitable appointment. We look forward to incorporating your expertise into the study and, of course, to the personal exchange.

Best regards,

Adrian Matt

and

Corinna Döpkens Freelancer for TravelBrain and study author

Contact: Email: doepkens@cd-travelmanagement.com

Explore Workation and Bleisure Travel: Corinna Döpkens’ dissertation reveals new flexible work trends.
